Ten Tips For Job Searching While Still Employed
We have all done it before. Had a bad meeting with our boss, been talked down to by a customer, or just day dreamed about what life would be like working for the other guy. Looking for a better job is best done financially while you have another job or a huge savings account because the length of job searches vary widely based on many attributes. Here are some tips to provide you with some wisdom along the way.
(1) Do not let your current employer find out about your intent to look around.
This could be reason enough to get you fired or at least result in an immediate disciplinary action not to mention the boss will probably pass you up on promotions because he or she thinks you are going to leave anyway.
(2) Get organized and commit to the job search process. Schedule time for the search and stick with it.
You have probably heard that in order to job search effectively you should treat your search like a full-time job. Many of us do not have that luxury of looking for a job 8 hours a day. Whether you do or not, shorten your search time by having Thompson & Company prepare your career related documents and schedule specific career coaching sessions that will definitely arm you with the tools to succeed faster.
(3) Don't feel guilty about looking around while employed. You owe it to yourself to make the most of your career.
We should all make a bona fide effort to improve our education, training, and knowledge. Don't wait on your HR department to hold your hand and provide you with everything you need to succeed. You have to take charge of your career yourself. Thompson & Company can guide you in the right direction and provide the tools to help get you where you want to go.
(4) Get a reliable answering machine at home you can check from a remote location. Make certain that the message a prospective employer hears when they call you for an interview is professional and courteous.
(5) Do not circulate your work number for new employment purposes.
This should be a common sense rule for anyone looking for a new position outside your present company. Nonetheless, I have seen it happen a few times in my profession.
(6) Do not send your resume or any other correspondence on current employer stationery.
Your employer's supplies were paid for out of your company's budget. Please respect their materials and purchase your own paper. Furthermore, you will make a bad impression on your prospective employer if they receive your resume, cover letter, or any correspondence from you written on your current employer's stationery.
(7) Take advantage of different time zones to make phone calls, if this applies to you. Always make phone calls early in the morning or just after work hours.
Most decision makers are engaged with company issues during the normal working hours of every day that keep them from having a minute to spare. The gatekeepers will prevent you from talking with them. Make it a practice to always call at what might seem odd times at first. It will make a difference.
(8) Use a nearby fax machine for correspondence if you don't have one at home (but not the one at work).
Many shopping centers have a postal annex or shipping company store of some kind. Most of these always have a fax machine at your service. The price is minor compared to the return.
(9) Do not use any resources of your current employer in your job search.
Some companies allow use of the Internet for personal use, but only occasionally. Most U.S. workers have used their lunch time to explore job postings on various Internet sites. A lot of time can be spent on seeking the right position listed among the many different postings. Online job searches should be restricted to your personal home computers. The process can be lengthy without the proper targeting of employers. Thompson & Company can provide the right guidance to make this process meaningful for you.
(10) Commit 10 - 12 hours per week for job searching and schedule your activities for the week during the prior weekend.
Thompson & Company can provide the proper targeting you need to help your job search advance in less time than if you conducted the search on your own. Call or e-mail us today to discover what a difference we can make for you.
